Powermatic Dual Drum Sander DDS-237 — 37″, 7.5 HP, 230V

Overview

The DDS-237 is a production-class dual drum sander with 37 inches of capacity, running 7.5 horsepower on single-phase 230V. Wide-capacity sanding usually means three-phase service; this one does not, which is the reason it lands in shops that would otherwise be capped at 25 inches.

Two drums in series is the whole point. Load the front drum with a coarse grit and the rear with a fine one, and stock comes out finish-sanded in a single pass instead of two runs and a paper change. The rear drum adjusts independently, so you dial the finishing drum relative to the roughing drum rather than accepting whatever height they share.

Both drums are steel with a hard durometer rubber coating. Harder rubber deflects less under feed pressure, so the machine corrects a surface rather than following the contour already there — the difference between flat and merely smooth. The coating also applies even pressure across the workpiece, which is what prevents drum marking.

The full-size cast iron table rides on four solid jackscrews with chain-drive timing, so all four corners move together and the table stays level across its full travel. That is what holds thickness consistent across a 37-inch panel. A heavy-duty poly conveyor belt grips stock positively at 8 or 12 surface feet per minute, forward or reverse.

Dual 4-inch dust ports with directional baffles pull from both drums rather than asking one port to serve the whole head — which keeps abrasive cleaner and extends its life measurably. A heavy steel cabinet minimizes vibration and gives you storage below the machine.
