Overview
The 1440F is Sharp’s 14-inch swing precision lathe — a geared-head machine with the feature set of a much larger engine lathe in a footprint and price a small shop can justify. Sharp positions it for schools and training programs, but it earns its place just as well in a general machine shop, a maintenance department, or a serious home shop.
The gap bed is the feature that punches above the price. Swing over the bed is 14 inches; pull the removable gap section and it opens to 20 inches. That means a large-diameter but short workpiece — a flange, a brake drum, a sheave — gets machined near the headstock without buying a larger-swing machine. Put the gap back in for everyday shaft work.
Everything in the headstock is built for wear. Chrome-Moly gears, hardened and ground, mounted on tapered roller bearings, with a forced lubrication system feeding gears, bearings, and shafts. Induction hardened and ground bedways handle the longitudinal movement. The spindle runs on two high-precision tapered roller bearings behind a D1-4 camlock nose with a 1-1/2 inch bore.
Two details experienced machinists notice. The compound, apron, and cross slide are oversized compared to similar-size machines, which is what lets you take a heavier cut without chatter. And the carriage carries an overload clutch that protects the gears and feed screws when a cut binds — the difference between a stalled machine and an expensive repair.
Sixteen spindle speeds from 45 to 1,800 RPM, a quick-change totally enclosed gearbox covering 40 inch threads and 22 metric, and a jog button for engaging gears and inching the spindle before you spin it up.

Ordering and freight
Ships by freight and needs rigging rather than a curbside drop. Send us your delivery address, dock situation, and access details and we will build a complete landed quote covering freight and placement.
Power: wired 220V as standard. A 440V installation requires either a different motor or a transformer — tell us your service and we will spec it correctly before the machine ships.
Package option: Sharp offers this machine bundled with a 2-axis digital readout, chuck guard with limit switch, steady rest, follow rest, and work light. Ask us for the package price if you want the lathe turnkey.
Also available: the 1440V is the same 14″ x 40″ frame with digital variable speed, 30–2,200 RPM, and single-phase capability.
